DigitalTrains™ has officially rolled out a visual and functional upgrade to its Route Profiles facility, allowing engineers to overlay high-fidelity 2D and 3D GPS maps directly beneath their live simulation animations.
Historically, analysing a vehicle or train set navigating a route meant looking at abstract line graphs or a train moving across a blank virtual void. While mathematically accurate, this lack of context meant engineers had to cross-reference simulation outputs manually with physical site drawings to understand where a dynamic anomaly was taking place.
With this latest update, users can now toggle a simple checkbox within the simulation animation window to project the exact geographic terrain and physical landscape directly into their dynamic analysis.
From Data Points to Geographic Reality
The new feature allows a fully detailed, multi-body 3D train model to be accurately overlayed on a topographically true GPS map. Far from being just a “nice to have” visual asset, this geospatial integration serves a critical engineering purpose:
- Instant Infrastructure Context: It allows users to immediately identify exactly where various features of the simulated tracks such as crossovers, switch points, and signal locations sit in relation to surrounding real-world infrastructure (like platform edges, tunnel mouths, overhead line equipment, or trackside buildings).
- Landscape Geometry Validation: The 3D map mapping introduces true physical geometry of the surrounding landscape. Engineers can visually evaluate how a train behaves as it moves through complex environments, such as a sharp curve cutting through a steep valley or an intermodal train navigating a descending gradient into a port terminal.
- Streamlined Diagnostic Reviews: When a simulation flags an issue such as a sudden spike in lateral wheel forces, a flange-climbing risk, or a suspension displacement the engineering team can instantly see the exact physical curve, embankment, or junction responsible for the stress.

By placing high-fidelity physics directly onto an easily recognisable real-world map, DigitalTrains™ also solves a major collaboration hurdle.
